अवन्तिका · The Lord of Time

The south-facing lord who rules time itself

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Mahakaleshwar — a self-manifested (swayambhu) Dakshinamurti linga — with Goddess Parvati worshipped here as Avantika.

ॐ नमः शिवाय महाकालेश्वराय

Mahakaleshwar is the third Jyotirlinga and the only one of the twelve that is Dakshinamurti — south-facing — the direction of Yama and death, over which Mahakal, the Lord of Time, himself presides. This gives the shrine its immense tantric power. According to the Shiva Purana, pleased by the devotion of King Chandrasena, Lord Shiva emerged in his terrifying Mahakal form to destroy the demon Dushana and protect the people of Avanti, then settled here forever as a Jyotirlinga. The temple is a five-level subterranean structure on the Shipra at Ujjain — one of the seven Mokshapuris, the capital of the legendary King Vikramaditya and the home of the great poet Kalidasa.

History & heritage

From Vikramaditya’s capital to Mahakal Lok

Ujjain — ancient Avantika — was one of the great cities of classical India: the seat of King Vikramaditya, the home of Kalidasa, and the prime meridian of Hindu astronomy, where the Tropic of Cancer crosses the city and time itself was once measured. Mahakaleshwar has stood at its heart since pre-historic origins, worshipped through the Paramara and Avanti eras. The original temple was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1235 CE, and the present structure was rebuilt by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde of Gwalior in 1734, in a Bhumija-and-Maratha idiom over a five-level subterranean sanctum.

The crowning glory of the temple in our own age is the Mahakal Lok corridor, inaugurated in 2022 — a 900-metre promenade lined with more than 200 statues and murals retelling the legends of Shiva from the Puranas. But the soul of Mahakaleshwar remains the Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM, when the linga is bathed and anointed with sacred ash to the thunder of Rudram, conches and bells — the most distinctive ritual in the Shaiva world, performed at no other Jyotirlinga.
